Magnetar: A Novel by Kris Fox of Fast and Loose
Life moves forward relentlessly, never pausing for anyone. Amidst the ever-changing nature of existence, finding inner peace and self-discovery can seem like a daunting task. It's easy to talk about, but much harder to put into action. Often, we overthink and force ourselves to learn who we truly are. Yet, when we simplify our lives, we realize that listening to ourselves requires minimal effort. Humans have a multitude of outlets through which they turn inward to listen—be it strumming guitars, riding waves on surfboards, wielding paintbrushes, embarking on travels, performing random acts of kindness, and so much more. And in this particular tale, that outlet happens to be a bicycle.
"Magnetar" serves as Kris Fox's second novel, not a direct sequel to his first work, "Pull Back or Die," but rather a simple continuation of its essence. It offers another honest portrayal of the bohemian lifestyle associated with action sports—a lifestyle centered around traveling, surviving on meager funds, and nurturing the cultural aspects of the craft rather than solely focusing on the sport. However, this time, the narrative unfolds in a post-pandemic world, with characters navigating their journeys through more mature perspectives. They may still exhibit a hint of recklessness, but their experiences have tempered their wildness. Instead of chasing "success" in global contests while succumbing to the temptations and societal pressures encountered worldwide, they are now confronted with fresh realities. These include the discontinuation of the once-comfortable global contest series, battles with cancer, adversity from injuries, supporting a brother coming out, and the sobering realization that their "professional careers" are nearing their conclusions. Each life eventually faces changes, and the weight of realizing that the fleeting enjoyment they once took for granted is even more transient than anticipated can be burdensome. In such moments, finding solace by turning inward and listening to oneself becomes crucial. And with the support of their companions who are undertaking similar journeys of self-discovery, they commit to the necessary work. Thus, they persevere through their travels and personal explorations, regardless of external circumstances such as boredom, poverty, illness, confusion, or injury. Harnessing the simplicity of a bicycle and the freedom it affords, they pack themselves into vans, traversing the country in squalor once again. They find themselves on remote islands amidst the vast expanse of the San Juan Islands and immerse themselves in the solitude of the Colorado mountains. In these diverse landscapes, they reinforce one another, take deep breaths, delve into their inner beings, explore their minds, and listen intently to the longings of their hearts while witnessing their long-held comforts crumble away.
Dedicated to embracing change, "Magnetar" is a tale that intertwines humor with profound introspection. It underscores the significance of community and family, emphasizing the importance of staying true to oneself while accepting and loving others for who they are. It stands as a resolute response to depression and heartbreak, providing strength in the face of the relentless challenges that test our sanity in every moment. The story celebrates the devotion to a unique craft, which kindles a love and passion that resonates with many but is often forgotten. Those who have experienced it understand its power, and fortunately, humans can always rekindle it at any stage of life through a simple craft that aligns with their interests. In this narrative, that craft is a bicycle—a pursuit that may not bring fame or wealth but offers the invaluable preservation of sanity. And when sanity is safeguarded, strength is fortified. With reinforced strength, the world appears less daunting, and happiness triumphs over trepidation.
